New Five Dollar Bill
March 13, 2008 by daveywhitney

The first new $5 bill was given out by the Federal Reserve today during a commemorative transaction at President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home in Washington, D.C.
The bill was redesigned of course to try and prevent counterfeiting. Personally I think they just wanted a cool new looking $5 bill. I mean who is gonna risk jail time to counterfeit old Honest Abe. No offense to the former president or anything but these days it would take a whole lots of fake fives to be worth counterfeiting.
New security features include:
1. Watermarks: The bill now has two watermarks built in to it . A big ass number “5″ watermark can be found in a blank space to the right of the Lincolns honest head replacing the previous watermark portrait of President Lincoln found on the older design $5 bills. The second watermark is a column of three smaller fives to the left of the portrait.
2. Security Thread: The embedded security thread running vertically can now be found to the right of the portrait on the redesigned green back. The letters “USA” followed by the number “5″ in an alternating pattern are visible along the thread from both sides of the bill. The thread glows blue when held under ultraviolet light.
So just file those tax returns and you’ll have enough of these new fives lying around you’ll be using them as coasters.
as a banker, this is so stressful!

I don’t know if it’s still the case, but in the past counterfitters have taken smaller denomination bills (like 1s or 5s) and use some process to remove the ink, then are able to “re-print” the money to larger denominations. Doing this eliminates the counterfitters need to replicate the paper and thus makes it easier. So my best guess would be the changes are at least somewhat targeted at making it more difficult to use a legal $5 and turn it into a larger denomination bill. FWIW.
That’s a pretty interesting point, like the dyes mix up and you can’t make the right color anymore? There are still old one’s out in circulation though, it will take awhile to solve the problem.
Hi,
I like the way you write about Money, Finances and bank ..Its really different and interesting … keep the momentum going ..I hope this will really going to help me in future while making investments….
brilliant. .
I thought the new five dollar bill was for gay-pride!
-O.k. why does it have specimen written on it, and let me guess it looks foreign b/c most of our supply is no longer domestic, meaning America is moving farther away from being self sufficient
………. Its gotsta big purple five on the back of it!
Hang on to the new 5s. They printed 2006 instead of 2008. They’ll be worth more than $5 soon!
I heard you could see Hillary Clintons face on one of the folds on Lincons face…Is this true?
